New York State offers competitive salaries and attractive benefits. For general information about employment with New York State and how to apply for a Civil Service Examination, visit the Department of Civil Service.

Executive Order No. 161 ensures pay equity for applicants for employment by prohibiting state entities from asking for the salary history, wages, benefits and other forms of payment an applicant for employment might have received from a former employer.

The Department is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Women, Minorities, and Individuals with Disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Summer Legal Internship Program

Each summer, the Department hosts rising 2Ls and 3Ls in its New York City office as part of the Department’s summer legal internship program.  The Department selects summer legal interns through the NYU Public Interest Law Career Fair, which occurs each February.  The internship is unpaid, and the Department expects that interns will obtain stipends from their schools, obtain school credit, or participate in a work study program.

NY HELPS Program

Several DFS positions are available through the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) program. For the duration of the program, these titles maybe filled via non-competitive appointments, which means no Civil Service examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date (within one year of appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment statuses converted to competitive statuses, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

DFS titles that are part of the NY HELPS program are noted in job postings.

Equitable, Fair, Transparent

The Department of Financial Services is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Women, Minorities and Individuals with Disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Employment with New York State qualifies an individual for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). This program forgives the remaining balance on any Direct Student Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments while working fulltime for a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or not-for-profit organization. To learn more about the program and whether you would qualify, please visit: https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Department of Financial Services is required to provide reasonable accommodation for known physical or mental limitations of an otherwise qualified applicant with a disability if an accommodation would enable the applicant to perform the essential functions of the job. If the accommodation would constitute an undue hardship on the operations of the agency, the agency is not required to provide it. All people with disabilities are encouraged to apply to all jobs for which they meet the minimum qualifications.

Pursuant to Executive Order 161, no State entity, as defined by the Executive Order, is permitted to ask, or mandate, in any form, that an applicant for employment provide his or her current compensation, or any prior compensation history, until such time as the applicant is extended a conditional offer of employment with compensation. If such information has been requested from you before such time, please contact the Office of Employee Relations at (518) 473-3130 or via email at [email protected].
